New Invasive Mosquito Species Found in Florida

Scientists have discovered an invasive, disease carrying mosquito species Aedes Scapularis in Florida.  This species is known to carry a host of diseases including yellow fever, dengue fever, and the zika virus all of which can be spread to humans.  The species is also known to transmit heartworms to dogs and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus to horses.

While the insect gravitates to lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, it is well suited to urban and rural environments as well.  Scientists have determined that the areas highlighted in warmer colors on this map are the most likely locations for the mosquito’s expansion.
